Aranda Textile Mills, the home of the iconic Basotho blanket, is proud to celebrate Basotho heritage, culture and creativity as headline sponsor of Mara A Basotho, taking place on 24 September 2026 at Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong.
Held on Heritage Day, Mara A Basotho brings together music, fashion, culture and community in a celebration of Basotho identity and the rich traditions that continue to shape contemporary South African culture.
This year, Mara A Basotho celebrates 30 years of existence. To honour this milestone, Aranda, together with Mara A Basotho, are launching a commemorative Mara A Basotho blanket. The blanket will be available for sale at the event and thereafter through Aranda’s extensive sales channels, including its factory shop, flagship stores and Aranda.co.za.
For Aranda, the partnership represents a natural extension of its long-standing commitment to preserving and celebrating the cultural significance of the Basotho blanket.
“For generations, the Basotho blanket has been far more than a blanket. It is a symbol of identity, pride, heritage and belonging,” says Palesa Tladi – Integrated Marketing Manager at Aranda Textile Mills. “Mara A Basotho gives us an opportunity to celebrate that heritage alongside the Basotho community while recognising the ways in which culture continues to evolve and inspire new generations.”
Manufactured in South Africa for more than seven decades, Aranda’s Basotho blankets have become deeply embedded in Basotho culture and tradition. From ceremonial occasions and milestones to everyday expressions of identity, the blanket has maintained its significance across generations.
Aranda has also continued to work with designers, creatives and cultural voices to demonstrate how the Basotho blanket can be interpreted in fresh and contemporary ways while respecting its heritage.
The company’s commitment to local manufacturing and its heritage products reflects its belief that cultural preservation and innovation can work hand in hand.
Mara A Basotho will provide a platform for this celebration through an experience that brings together the community and showcases Basotho culture in a contemporary setting.
As South Africa marks Heritage Day, Aranda is encouraging audiences to look beyond a single day of celebration and to consider the importance of protecting, supporting and passing cultural traditions on to future generations.
“The strongest traditions are those that remain relevant,” adds Richard Ramakhatha, Chairman for Mara a Basotho “Our responsibility is not only to preserve the heritage associated with the Basotho blanket, but to ensure that young people continue to see it as something that belongs to them and that can be worn, celebrated and reimagined with pride.”
Aranda Textile Mills looks forward to welcoming guests to Mara A Basotho and joining the celebration of a culture whose colours, stories and traditions continue to make an enduring contribution to South Africa’s cultural landscape.
